Themed Bed & Breakfasts - Greenmount Lodge

Greenmount LodgeProperty Name: Greenmount Lodge

Theme(s): Food

Greenmount Lodge was built on the site an 18th century estate house, though a more modern building; it is surrounded by the existing stone outhouses which form a courtyard, whose walls could tell a few stories.   In fact there’s a song “Greenmount Smiling Ann” which is about a servant girl who fell in love with the masters’ son and was murdered the night before they were to leave together for America.  She is buried on the estate and it is said her ghost walks though the arch gateway into the farmyard at night.  But don’t worry, she hasn’t managed to master the more modern door handles yet, so you’ll be safe indoors.  Located a few miles outside Omagh town, this 200 acre working estate comprises mature woodlands, green pastures and a gently flowing river in spectacular contrast to some of the bleak bogland hills which create the undulating terrain of Co. Tyrone.

Your hosts at Greenmount, Louie & son Henry Reid have made a promise.  That promise is to make your stay one of relaxation, with the comforts of home, delivered with courtesy.  In an effort to realize this promise, Greenmount Lodge has recently been refurbished and their hard work has been rewarded with 4 stars from the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.  Awards are nothing new to the Reid household, Louie an accomplished chef, had her own Restaurant for 30 years and received many awards for her cooking during this time.  Having retired in 2006, now, only the Guests at Greenmount have exclusive access to tasting the exquisite dishes created by Louie’s fair hands.  Ideally Louie likes a minimum of 8-10 to dine, when she can serve up beef or lamb reared on the estate, from field to fork and not a food mile to feel guilty about.  In fact, guilt is an emotion to be left at the gates of Greenmount especially when there is Sticky Toffee Pudding for dessert.  Louie is renowned for her ‘puddings’ and this one in particular, so don’t hold back!!!  Where possible, Louie uses local produce in season and is lucky to have a few organic farms in the area to source her vegetables and has recently found a farm with 100 ducks.  Growing up in a house with such a flair for food, it was inevitable that it was going to rub off on the family.  Henry’s son Alan is the proud owner of the successful ‘Shu’ Restaurant in Belfast.  Though not a formally trained Chef himself, he has been known to apply himself in the kitchens at Shu when necessary, under the watchful eye of TV chef Brian McCann.   Louie enjoys knowing she can tap in on Brian’s skills, should she need to.  Along with her knowledge of all things culinary, Louie, with her lovely northern lilt can tell you a little of the wild life on the farm and the local wild birds.  Though they have pheasants on the estate, they are like Henry’s pets, strictly not for the table!!!

Be sure and pack comfortable clothing when visiting Greenmount Lodge, for those leisurely walks around the estate and to accommodate the waistline after all that wonderful cooking!!!
