Themed Bed & Breakfast - Teach Cuailgne, Kells

Teach CuailgneProperty Name: Teach Cuailgne

Theme(s): Golf & Angling

Peggy O’Reilly enjoyed growing up on the wilds of the beautiful Cooley Peninsula.  In later life when faced with what to call her lovely home just 3kms from the Heritage town of Kells, she decided to bring a little of her own local history to the area when she called the house Teach Cuailgne, pronounced (cool-nya).  Cuailgne is the Irish word for Cooley, which has a great legend attached regarding Queen Maedbh of Connacht coveting a bull from Cuailgne, but the legendary Cú Chulainn fought off her armies.  This and the fact that Teach Cuailgne is on the N52 which heads towards Cooley keeps Peggy close to her roots.

The O’Reilly home is very comfortable and Peggy serves locally made yoghurts and cheeses along with brown bread made by Peggy from wholemeal which comes from the local mill at Martry. This is the ideal base from which to golf, angle or indeed visit the many historical attractions which make Co. Meath, Ireland’s heritage capital.  But the beauty of the flatlands of Meath is that it makes a great home to lush parkland golf courses, many which are within 20kms of Teach Cuailgne.  You think Peggy is good on the history of Cooley; well she is the complete expert at Golf, along with the rest of the O’Reilly family.  Members of the much envied Headfort Golf Club in Kells, Peggy was the lady Captain in 2001, and been active on the committee there over the past 10 years.  Here is a lady truly dedicated to her sport.  Peggy currently plays off 25, she maintains like everything else, things increase with age!!  Peggy will be delighted to organize the booking of tee-times and equipment at any of the golf clubs in the area.  There is even a provision for a battery charger available at Teach Cuailgne (for those who like to take the easy way round the course) in the outhouse along with storage and drying facilities.  If a keen golfer, you will have heard of ‘a mulligan’- the one free stroke allowed to each player per 9 holes of play, to be played at his/her discretion.  This was the brainchild of Arthur Mulligan a well known Meath golfing personality, who once said, “the courses here leave me little choice but to count creatively”…

So Peggy can help you with the golf, well all you have to do is pop next door for help with the fishing on the River Blackwater which sweeps its way around the local countryside.  Peggy knows the local Fishing Club Secretary who will advise you on the best way to go about securing a catch, and Pat McLoughlin, local fishing guide, can guide you on the local waters when pre arranged.  The River Blackwater meets up with the River Boyne further downstream, from which it is said the Salmon of Knowledge was caught, you never know your luck.

Though Peggy doesn’t serve evening meals, unwind with some of the books dotted about Teach Cuailgne, or the odd evening you will be lucky to catch Peggy’s son tinkling the keys of the piano, or strumming the guitar, better still squeezing the accordion into some toe tapping traditional tunes!
